"Synagogue that fought zoning finds a home," Philadelphia Inquirer
This story by Keith Herbert describes how Congregation Kol Ami has finally found a home outside Abington Township, which applied its zoning laws almost five years ago to prevent the Congregation from using a 250-seat chapel as a synagogue. Herbert's story includes this quote:
Blocking Kol Ami's use of an 11-acre property that was once used by nuns violates the congregation's constitutional right to the free exercise of religion, said Anthony Picarello Jr., of the Becket Fund, a Washington, D.C., group that litigates religious-freedom cases.
"Hostility to people's religions can find itself into the zoning process, and there are very few checks to prevent it from happening," Picarello said.
