Palm Beach County Abandons Limits on Megachurches' Growth

Palm Beach County commissioners on Thursday [April 27, 2006] dropped controversial zoning proposals that would limit the size of churches -- an effort to stem the tide of megachurches that are springing up throughout South Florida.

Residents and community officials have complained about unchecked church growth, citing parking problems and rising traffic, said Barbara Alterman, director of planning, zoning and building.
After Thursday's revisions, the proposed zoning rules in Palm Beach County would require congregations to have adequate parking, but set no limits on seating or cathedral square footage.
